Encounter ends with capture of student murder suspect in Varanasi
Varanasi, August 24: The Varanasi police has arrested the accused in MSc student Shreya Upadhyay’s murder case after an encounter near Jamuni village in Rohania area on Monday morning, where he was shot in the leg; a .315‑bore pistol and cartridges were recovered, and the injured accused was hospitalized, police informed.
According to Rajatalab police, the arrested accused has been identified as Puneet Mishra, a resident of Mau. During the operation, one of his companions, riding a bike, escaped. Police are searching for him.
Investigations have revealed that Puneet Mishra also played a role in the murder of student Shreya. It is alleged that he lured his accomplices with lakhs of rupees to carry out the crime. Police are now investigating the role of other accused in the murder and the alleged financial inducement offered by Puneet.
The main accused, Vivek Choubey, is still at large. Four police teams are conducting raids at various locations to arrest him. According to police, Vivek’s mobile phone has been switched off since the incident and he has been constantly changing locations. His relatives, acquaintances, and people he has been in contact with are also being questioned. Police may soon unravel the entire case. Shreya Upadhyay, the 22-year-old only daughter of Sunil Upadhyay, a resident of Marui village in the Rajatalab police station area, was a second-year MSc Chemistry student at Jagatpur PG College.
According to family members, she left home on the morning of August 18th to go to college. It is alleged that Vivek Choubey, a distant relative, met her on the way, took her on a bike to his rented room in Bachhan-Paschimpura, Rohaniya, and murdered her. Since the incident, the family has been demanding action against Vivek Choubey and his relatives, accusing them of complicity. Police are currently searching for the main accused, Vivek Choubey, and other suspects involved in the murder.
