
GST officer arrested red‑handed in Varanasi while taking ₹50,000 bribe
Varanasi, July 15: The Varanasi team of the Uttar Pradesh Vigilance Establishment (UP Vigilance) caught Ambika, Deputy Commissioner of Sector-6 of the State Tax (GST) Department, accepting a bribe. A case has been registered against her under relevant sections and necessary action is being taken.
According to the Vigilance team officers, Ajay Kumar Maurya, a resident of Lakhraon Bajardiha, Police Station Bhelupur, Varanasi, is the director of Black Smith Industries Private Limited. He had applied for clarification/clearance of his company’s February 2023 return and the company’s GST (State) assessment file.
It is alleged that the Deputy Commissioner was demanding a bribe of 50,000 rupees for this work. The victim complained to the Vigilance Department, after which the Vigilance Establishment verified the matter and found the allegations to be true. Following the planned investigation, the team arrested Deputy Commissioner Ambika red-handed as she approached a restaurant in Chetganj to allegedly accept a bribe of 50,000 rupees. Officers then gathered necessary evidence on the spot and began questioning the accused female officer. The accused officer allegedly tried to escape and even scuffled with female police officers, but the Vigilance team caught and arrested her.
Following the arrest, an FIR was registered against Ambika under relevant sections at the Vigilance Establishment Police Station, Varanasi Sector.
