UP govt extends tenure of village heads as administrators until Panchayat polls

Lucknow, May 25: The Uttar Pradesh government issued an order appointing village heads as administrators late Monday evening due to the non-conduct of three-tier Panchayat elections. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has given this significant gift to the village heads. Village head organizations had been demanding that the current village heads be allowed to run the administration after the term ends until the elections are held. Following this order, district magistrates will now issue orders appointing village heads as administrators in their respective districts, and they will begin their work on May 27.

This will be the first time in the state that an administrative committee will be formed at the village panchayat level. There are 57,694 Gram Panchayats in the state, and their tenure ends on May 26. Speculation surrounding the role of Gram Panchayat Pradhans after their term ends has ended today.

Following the green light from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Panchayat Raj Department issued an order late Monday evening stating that the outgoing Gram Panchayat Pradhans will continue to manage the affairs of the Gram Panchayats. This period could be six months or longer. Pradhans will perform all routine tasks until the Gram Panchayat elections are held, while proposals regarding policy decisions will be submitted to the District Magistrate through the District Panchayat Raj Officer (DPRO), who will make the final decision.

The government order states that the Gram Panchayats’ term ends on May 26. Following this, from May 27, Gram Pradhans will act as administrators, and the District Magistrates of the respective districts will issue orders appointing them.
