“Demolishing mosques in name of illegality is wrong”—Mayawati
Lucknow, September 05: The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) national president Mayawati on Saturday reacted to the action of the district administration in demolishing a mosque built on government land in Saharanpur district.
Mayawati said that the ongoing government campaign of demolishing mosques in a hurry by calling them illegal in Saharanpur and across Uttar Pradesh is not right. To avoid such a situation, the government should immediately stop this and take other measures to resolve it.
Posting on X, Mayawati said that in any case, it is the responsibility of a constitutional secular government to respect and protect the followers of all religions and their religious places equally. In Islam, mosques are a central and integral part of daily worship, and even offering prayers in congregation multiple times a day. Keeping this in mind and respecting them in accordance with Indian tradition is essential in the national and wider public interest.
Mayawati said that people are deeply disturbed by the actions of demolishing the house of an accused and rendering his entire family homeless by collective punishment without proper adherence to law and order.
She said that it would be appropriate if not only the government but also the courts pay proper attention to this matter.
However, the party also appeals to everyone to maintain a harmonious environment in such circumstances.
