
PM Modi to inaugurate ₹13,000 cr development projects in Chennai on Sunday
New Delhi, October 10: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, on Sunday and will lay the foundation stone and inaugurate various development projects worth over ₹13,000 crore. These projects include projects related to metro rail, national highways, railways, ports, petroleum, and education.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Modi will inaugurate the Poonamallee-Vadapalani section of the second phase of the Chennai Metro Rail Project. Built at a cost of approximately ₹4,900 crore, this section includes a 3.7-kilometer-long double-decker structure. It has been fitted with a modern signaling system suitable for driverless operation. The opening of this section is expected to improve connectivity between Chennai’s western suburbs and the city center and reduce travel time for commuters.
Modi will lay the foundation stone and inaugurate several national highway projects worth approximately ₹3,700 crore in Tamil Nadu. These include the four-laning of a 36-kilometer stretch of the Vadugapatti-Therkuvenganallur section of National Highway 744 and the four-laning of a 30-kilometer stretch of the Madurai Ring Road. The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for the Tiruvarur bypass on the Nagapattinam-Thanjavur section of National Highway 83. These projects are expected to ease traffic flow, reduce congestion, and strengthen regional connectivity.
The Prime Minister will also dedicate railway infrastructure projects worth over ₹750 crore to the nation. These include the Karaikal-Peralam rail line and three rail flyovers in Coimbatore and surrounding areas. He will also inaugurate five railway stations redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme in Palani, Vellore Cantonment, Ambasamudram, Paramakudi, and Namakkal. These projects are expected to strengthen rail connectivity and reduce congestion and waiting times at railway crossings.
In the port sector, the Prime Minister will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for various projects related to Chennai Port, Kamarajar Port, and V.O. Chidambaranar Port. At Chennai Port, a concrete storage area, four import-export warehouses, an upgraded cruise terminal, and a sailors’ club will be inaugurated. Eight major development projects at V.O. Chidambaranar Port will help enhance cargo and container handling capacity and improve logistics. At Kamarajar Port, the Coal Berth-3 project will be inaugurated and the foundation stone will be laid for capital dredging work for the second part of the first phase of the container terminal.
Modi will also lay the foundation stone for a lubricant base oil production project at Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited’s existing Manali Refinery. This project, costing approximately ₹1,620 crore, will have a production capacity of 270,000 metric tons per annum. It will produce Group-2 and Group-3 grade lubricant base oils to produce high-quality lubricants in India.
The Prime Minister will dedicate the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras to the nation. He will also launch the Centre’s global scientific mission, which will create cell-level, three-dimensional atlases of over 100 human brains at various stages of human life, from embryonic to old age. An atlas of ischemic stroke in the human brain, called “C-Stroke,” will also be released on this occasion. It contains over 1,000 labeled microscopic sections of stroke-affected brains, which are expected to help researchers discover new treatment targets.
The Prime Minister will also attend the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Chennai and address the gathering. This celebration will mark the Institute’s five decades of contribution to the field of education.
Prior to this, Modi will travel by metro rail from Poonamallee Bypass Station to Poonamallee Bypass Station at around 11:30 am. He will then offer prayers and visit the Jalakandeswarar Temple in Chennai at around 12:15 pm and visit the Brain Centre at IIT Madras. After participating in a program related to development projects at around 1:30 pm, he will attend the school’s golden jubilee celebrations at 3 pm.
