Lucknow court area turns tense amid bulldozer action against illegal chambers
Lucknow, October 25: The Lucknow civic authorities, acting on High Court orders, launched a demolition drive against lawyers’ chambers encroaching on public spaces outside the Kaiserbagh District Court on Sunday amid protests by advocates and heavy deployment of police and paramilitary forces.
The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) is demolishing the chambers, declaring them illegal. Prior to the action, red marks were placed on the respective chambers and notices were issued. Approximately 250 chambers are being demolished. The final number of demolitions is yet to be officially confirmed.
Approximately 10 bulldozers and 10 heavy vehicles have been deployed to remove debris. Adequate police force has been deployed to deal with any disruptions, disturbances, or law and order situations. Security has been tightened throughout the area.
Protests against the removal of chambers, concerns about livelihood disruptions.
Lawyers protesting the demolition say they built their chambers using their own savings. Their removal will impact their work and livelihoods. Protesting lawyers, including Anil Tiwari, Ghanshyam Singh, and Devendra Garg, accused the administration of removing the chambers without providing alternative arrangements. Female lawyers were also seen expressing emotional outbursts.
Protesting lawyers stated that chambers are a fundamental necessity for their profession and that appropriate alternatives should be provided before they are removed. Some protesters also expressed their political opposition to the action, promising to retaliate in the upcoming 2027 assembly elections.
Meanwhile, the Municipal Corporation’s action is being carried out in compliance with a High Court order. During the action of removing constructions made on footpaths and public places, the administration’s focus is on maintaining law and order and completing the demolition.
