India signs pact with US for javelin anti‑tank missiles: Envoy confirms
New Delhi, August 28: The US Ambassador Sergio Gore on Friday announced that India is going to buy the battle-proven FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank missile system from the US. He described it as a major development in US-India defense relations.
Making the announcement on Instagram, Gore wrote, “Big news! India plans to purchase the battle-proven Javelin anti-tank system. As US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth stated at the Shangri-La Dialogue in May 2026, this is a major step forward in the US-India defense relationship and opens up co-production possibilities. Cooperation between our two countries is at a record high.”
The statement cited remarks made by the US Secretary of Defense at the Shangri-La Dialogue in May 2026 and highlighted potential co-production opportunities based on the US approval in 2025 for the initial sale of Javelin missiles valued at approximately $45 million. This development reflects a deepening strategic partnership, enhancing India’s anti-armor capabilities and advancing joint defense manufacturing goals.
It is noteworthy that India will purchase the Javelin missile through the US Foreign Military Sales process. The package includes 100 missile rounds, training equipment, and launch units, initially valued at $45.7 million.
