Police block opposition leaders from visiting hunger‑striking Sonam Wangchuk in Gurugram hospital
Gurugram, July 22: On Wednesday evening, 15 opposition MPs, including Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, reached Medanta to meet Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on a hunger strike for 25 days in support of students in Delhi, but were stopped by police at the hospital gate.
MP Sanjay Singh had a heated argument with the police. When they were denied entry, all the MPs staged a sit-in protest at the hospital gate. Wangchuk’s wife, Geetanjali, also arrived. Geetanjali said that Sonam has written a letter to the government outlining her conditions and demands. The government should accept these demands.
After the protest continued for about an hour, the medical team monitoring Wangchuk arrived at the scene. The team provided a health update and, citing medical reasons, stated that only blood relatives were permitted to meet the patient. The MP then left.
Sanjay Singh alleged that the government, not wanting to allow Wangchuk to break his fast, wanted to kill him.
Wangchuk has written a letter to Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh. In the letter, he expressed gratitude for the government’s initiative and stated his three main demands. The first is that the families of the students who committed suicide following the paper leak be given adequate compensation. The second is that a meaningful discussion be held in Parliament to determine accountability. The third is that the Education Minister’s resignation be considered.
Wangchuk also set conditions for breaking his fast. He stated that the “Chalo Sansad” march on July 20, 2026, remained peaceful despite police action. He would end his fast upon receiving assurances that no legal action, such as harassment, or punitive action, would be taken against the protesters.
