India approves 18-hour daily power supply to Nepal till year-end
New Delhi, September 14: India has stepped up support for Nepal’s disaster relief efforts, with the Union Ministry of Power approving the Nepal Electricity Authority to import electricity for 18 hours daily between September 13 and December 31, 2026, ensuring enhanced power supply during the crisis.
According to the ministry, a maximum of 600 MW of power will be supplied to Nepal through the Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar 400 kV DC line. In addition, up to 54 MW of power will be sent through the Tanakpur-Mahendranagar 132 kV SC line.
The ministry stated that the power export volume and supply arrangements from January 2027 will be reviewed in December 2026. This will help determine further arrangements based on Nepal’s power needs and availability.
It is noteworthy that recent severe floods in Nepal have caused significant damage to hydropower infrastructure. This has impacted domestic power generation and deepened the country’s power crisis. At this time, additional power supplies from India will help meet Nepal’s immediate energy needs. The
Ministry of Power stated that this decision will not only provide Nepal with essential energy assistance during the crisis, but will also further strengthen reliable and long-term energy cooperation between the two countries.
