UP farmer suffering from financial crisis consumes sulphas, dies

Hamirpur, July 31: A farmer suffering from financial crisis in Barkhera village, located in the Sumerpur police station area of Hamirpur district in Uttar Pradesh, died on Friday during treatment in Kanpur hospital after allegedly consuming poisonous substance.

The deceased’s brother, Rajkumar Verma, said that 32-year-old Jitendra Verma lived separately from his family. He owned about two and a half bighas of agricultural land, which he had mortgaged. As farming was unable to meet the family expenses, he drove an auto to support his wife and three children.

According to family members, his auto had broken down three days ago and he had no money to get it repaired. He tried to get financial help and loans from several people, but received no assistance. Distressed by this problem, he allegedly consumed sulphas. When his condition worsened, his family took him to Sadar Hospital, where, after first aid, doctors referred him to Kanpur.

He died on Friday morning while undergoing treatment in Kanpur. The deceased leaves behind his wife Jyoti and three sons, Shubham, Subhash, and Arpit. His death has left the family inconsolable, and the village is in mourning.

The Sumerpur police station chief Pawan Kumar Patel said Friday evening that he was unaware of the incident. If a complaint is received, the matter will be investigated and necessary action will be taken. The post-mortem of the body is being conducted in Kanpur.
