
US approves Apache helicopter support deal for India
New Delhi, May 19: The US Department of State has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to India of Apache helicopters, support services, and related equipment at an estimated cost of US$198.2 million.
According to a notification issued by the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs, US Department of State, the Indian government has requested the purchase of AH-64E Apache helicopters, maintenance and operational support services, engineering, technical, and logistical support services from the US government and contractors, technical data and publications, personnel training, and other related logistical and program support services.
The US stated that this proposed sale will further strengthen the India-US strategic relationship and enhance the security capabilities of a major defense partner. The statement said that India remains a vital force for political stability, peace, and economic progress in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia region.
According to the US State Department, the proposed deal will strengthen India’s ability to address current and future threats, enhance its domestic security, and increase its deterrence against regional threats. India will have no difficulty in integrating these equipment and services into its military.
The statement also stated that the proposed sale of this equipment and assistance will not impact the existing military balance in the region.
The prime contractors for this deal will be Boeing and Lockheed Martin. Boeing is headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, and Lockheed Martin is headquartered in Orlando, Florida. This proposed sale will not adversely impact US defense preparedness.
