New Delhi, 27 August: Delhi Police has cancelled stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui’s show in Delhi. Delhi Police has refused permission to Faruqui to perform the show. The licensing unit of Delhi Police has denied permission after the local Central District Police wrote a report stating that the show would affect communal harmony in the area.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad wrote a letter to Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora, on August 25, demanding cancellation of Faruqui’s show. The VHP has alleged in its letter that communal tensions arose due to Munawar’s jokes on Hindu deities in Bhagyanagar. The VHP further said in the letter that if the show is not cancelled, VHP and Bajrang Dal members will protest.

Munawar Faruqui has a long history of controversies. Last Saturday, Faruqui did a standup comedy show in Hyderabad amid tight security. Telangana BJP chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar called for a boycott of the show, alleging that Faruqui had made fun of Hindu gods.

Earlier this week, suspended BJP MLA from Telangana T Raja Singh was arrested by the state police for his remarks on the Prophet in a video posted on social media. Singh said that his video was in response to a show organised by Faruqui in Hyderabad. Protests erupted in Telangana after Singh’s alleged remarks on the Prophet. He was earlier arrested on Tuesday and released following a court order.

Earlier, Faruqui’s show in Bengaluru was also cancelled saying that the organisers did not take prior permission to organise the event.
