General NS Raja Subramani assumes charge as India’s third CDS, vows organizational reforms
New Delhi, May 31: The General NS Raja Subramani assumed charge as the country’s third Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) on Sunday. He was given a guard of honour at the South Block Lawns. The new CDS laid a wreath at the National War Memorial. He said that organizational reforms will be the main focus for transformation of the armed forces. Self-reliance is a central pillar of our national security. We will develop indigenous weapons for our armed forces and rapidly induct them into service.
CDS General NS Raja Subramani said, “I am honoured to assume charge as the Chief of Defence Staff. We are grateful to the nation for the trust placed in the armed forces. Innovation in thinking and work will enhance our capabilities.” Greater collaboration between the military, industry, academia, startups, and the research ecosystem will be a key driver of modernization. Our armed forces have consistently demonstrated professionalism and operational decision-making in safeguarding our nation’s interests. We are committed to protecting our nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
He heartily thanked former CDS General Bipin Rawat and General Anil Chauhan for their outstanding leadership and contributions to this journey, adding, “We recognize the courage and professionalism of our soldiers, sailors, and air warriors. Their training and well-being will be our top priority. We hope to pay tribute to our bravehearts, whose bravery, sacrifice, and dedication to the nation continue to inspire us. We are committed to the well-being of our veterans and brave women. He assured the citizens of India that the armed forces will continue to serve the nation with dedication, courage, honor, and professionalism.”
The central government created the post of Chief of Army Staff (CDS) on January 1, 2020, to foster greater coordination between the three services. Subsequently, General Bipin Rawat became India’s first CDS. His tenure lasted from January 1, 2020, to December 8, 2021. General Bipin Rawat passed away in an unfortunate plane crash in Kannur, Kerala, on December 8. Following this, the post remained vacant from December 9, 2021, to September 29, 2022. General Anil Chauhan (Retd.) was then appointed as the second CDS on September 30, 2022. His tenure ended on May 30, after which Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani (Retd.) has been given this important responsibility as the third CDS. He will now command all three armed forces.
