Rampur’s Jauhar university road declared public, open for traffic
Rampur, July 18: The Public Works Department (PWD) has officially declared the 3.5‑kilometer road inside Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar University, owned by former cabinet minister and Samajwadi Party leader Mohammad Azam Khan, as government property, opening it fully for public traffic after spending ₹13 crore on its construction and placing a signboard at the university gate marking it as PWD’s road.
It is noteworthy that in 2003-04, during Mulayam Singh Yadav’s tenure as Chief Minister, Azam Khan had the Public Works Department construct a nearly three-and-a-half-kilometer-long road through the main gate of Jauhar University, as indicated in the proposed map. The university’s construction was completed after the Samajwadi Party government was re-elected. Subsequently, in May 2016, a budget of ₹17 crore was approved for the widening of this road under the Accelerated Economic Development Scheme. The road was widened at a cost of over ₹13 crore.
In 2019, following a complaint about the use of government funds at Jauhar University, the then District Magistrate formed a nine-member team to investigate. The investigation uncovered records of works carried out at the private university using government funds. The then District Magistrate, considering the matter to be corrupt, sent a report to the government for a high-level investigation and action. The matter was subsequently shelved.
Rampur District Magistrate Ajay Kumar Dwivedi stated on Saturday that the use of this road, built with government funds, was previously solely within the jurisdiction of the university administration. However, the Public Works Department has now placed a sign at the university gate, declaring it a public road. Following the sign, preparations are underway to allow public movement on this road. The sign has also been installed, and anyone can now travel on this road.
