Shekhar Suman’s scathing attack on the Hindi film industry
Veteran actor Shekhar Suman has launched a scathing attack on current Bollywood and the thinking of today’s filmmakers. He said that Hindi cinema no longer possesses the originality and critical thinking that was once seen during the eras of Raj Kapoor, Guru Dutt, and Bimal Roy. Shekhar alleged that today’s directors are simply copying hit formulas, and creativity is steadily eroding.
During a recent conversation, Shekhar Suman said that while Indian cinema is technically no less than any other in the world, it has lagged far behind in terms of originality. He said, “Today’s actors are stuck in their fixed image, and producers and directors are afraid to take risks due to financial pressures. They have become dependent on hit formula films.” Shekhar further stated that today’s filmmakers clearly lack the original thinking of K. Asif, Guru Dutt, Bimal Roy, and Raj Kapoor.
The actor added that classic films like “Mughal-e-Azam,” “Ganga Jamuna,” “Kaagaz Ke Phool,” “Pyaasa,” and “Mera Naam Joker” still live on in people’s hearts because they were completely original and emotionally powerful. According to him, today’s emphasis is placed more on making films commercially successful than creatively beautiful. Shekhar Suman is also in the news these days for his new talk show, “Shekhar Tonight,” which recently began streaming.
