
Prime Minister Modi embarks on Seychelles trip to strengthen ties
New Delhi, June 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed from Delhi on Saturday for the East African country of Seychelles. He is on a three-day state visit (June 27-29).
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Seychelles is at the invitation of President Dr Patrick Herminie. Seychelles is celebrating the Golden Jubilee (50th anniversary) of its National Day, where he will attend as the chief guest. Prime Minister Modi previously visited Seychelles in 2015.
During the visit, Prime Minister Modi will meet with Seychelles President Herminie. The two leaders will review all areas of India-Seychelles cooperation and share views on regional and international issues.
During the visit, Prime Minister Modi will also address the National Assembly of Seychelles, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to address the gathering. He will also meet with members of the Indian community living there. This visit is considered an important step towards strengthening the strong friendship, maritime cooperation, and mutual partnership between India and Seychelles.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, in his statement before departure, Prime Minister Modi said, “Seychelles is an important maritime neighbor and a key partner in our vision for the oceans and our shared commitment to the global South. This year, we also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of our diplomatic relations, which are based on mutual trust, shared democratic values, respect for diversity, and deep affinity between our peoples.”
He stated, “Building on the successful State visit of President Herminie to India in February 2026, I look forward to our discussions aimed at further strengthening our enduring friendship. We will work together to advance the progress of our peoples and promote security and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region. During this visit, I will have the honor of becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to address the National Assembly of Seychelles. This historic occasion reflects the strong democratic values and parliamentary traditions that bind our two countries.”
The Prime Minister said that he also looks forward to interacting with the vibrant Indian community in Seychelles, which has nurtured the special India-Seychelles friendship for generations and serves as a living bridge between our two countries. He is confident that his visit will further deepen the long-standing ties between the two countries, enhance maritime cooperation in the Indian Ocean region, and advance our shared vision of a secure, peaceful, and prosperous Indian Ocean region.
